 해미읍성은 우리나라 천주교 순교자와 관련이 있는 곳이다. 1935년에 간행된 <해미 순교자 약사(海美 殉敎者 略史)>의 기록을 보면 교도들을 투옥하고 문초하였던 옥사를 발굴한 것이다. 김대건 신부의 증조부도 이 곳에서 옥고를 치르고 순교했다.

Haemieupseong Fortress is closely related with the early Roman Catholic Church in Korea. The town"s current prison house is a reproduction of the original, which became a major venue for the persecution of Catholics during the late Joseon period, and is in fact erected on the same site.
